The National Biosolids Partnership
(NBP) is a
not-for-profit alliance of the Association of Metropolitan
Sewerage Agencies, Water Environment Federation and U.S.
Environmental Protection Agency formed to endorse environmentally sound and sustainable biosolids
management practices that build confidence within local communities.
To help
achieve its purpose, the NBP developed a Biosolids
EMS Program to which public or privately operated wastewater treatment
facilities may voluntarily subscribe. A
cornerstone of this program is the "EMS for
Biosolids", a standard published in 2002 that describes
NBP's expectations and requirements for an environmental management
system to be used in biosolids management. |

|
Organizations that
participate in the NBP's program commit to develop an environmental management system that meets
NBP's expectations and requirements, as prescribed in their EMS for
Biosolids. Conformance of the EMS is verified through continual audits by an independent accredited
third party audit company.
|
Organizations that participate in
the NBP Biosolids EMS Program agree to:
-
Commit to and follow the NBP
Code of Good Practice and biosolids practices prescribed by authoritative
sources (such as the National Manual of Good Practice).
-
Proactively involve the public
in their EMS planning and communicate with the public and other interested
parties about their EMS progress and biosolids activities.
-
Develop and implement an EMS
that meets requirements of the 17 elements of the EMS for Biosolids
throughout their biosolids value chain activities (pretreatment, solids
generation, solids collection, stabilization, transportation / storage and
biosolids use / disposition).
-
Demonstrate that their EMS is
generating expected outcomes in the areas of environmental performance,
regulatory compliance, community awareness and quality practices.
