Responsible Care^® and Responsible Distribution Process^sm

Responsible Care^® and Responsible Distribution Process^sm refer to initiatives within the chemical industry designed to achieve improvements in environmental, health and safety performance. They include principles and practices that companies commit to follow.

Responsible Care^®

Responsible Care^® is a code of practice for chemical manufacturing companies.  As a condition of membership in the American Chemistry Council, companies agree to:

• Commit to following the principles of the Responsible Care Code of Management Practice, including the Security Code

• Implement a Responsible Care Management System (RCMS) and verify, through regular independent third party audits, that the system meets RCMS requirements and that appropriate actions are being taken to improve performance

• Track and publicly report performance based on economic, environmental, health and safety, societal and product related metrics

Responsible Distribution Process^sm

Responsible Distribution Process^sm (RDP) is an initiative of the National Association of Chemical Distributors (NACD) and its member companies.  As a condition of membership in NACD, member companies commit to follow the Responsible Distribution Process^sm Guiding Principles and code of management practices.  On-site verification by an approved third party is done to verify that the member company has developed and implemented the RDP Code of Management Practice and that regulations and good industry practices are actually implemented and appropriately address products and associated risks.

The RDP Guiding Principles are shown below

1. To recognize and respond to community concerns about chemicals, their handling, and transportation.

2. To make health, safety, security, and environmental considerations a priority in our planning for all existing and new operations, products, processes, and facilities.

3. To inform emergency response officials, employees, customers, and the public of manufacturer’s information on chemical-related health or environmental hazards, and the manufacturer’s recommendations on protective measures.

4. To work with customers, in accordance with manufacturer’s recommendations, on product stewardship including handling, use, transportation, and disposal of chemical products.

5. To operate our plants and facilities in a manner that protects the health and safety of our employees, the public and the environment. 

6. To cooperate in resolving problems created by past handling and disposal of hazardous chemicals.

7. To participate with government and others in creating responsible laws, regulations, and practices to help safeguard the community, workplace, and environment.

8. To promote the principles and practices of Responsible Distribution Process^sm by sharing experiences and offering assistance to others who produce, handle, use, transport, or dispose of chemicals.
