Environmental Management and ISO-14001 ISO-14001 is the specification standard for environmental management systems developed by the International Organization for Standardization as part of the ISO-14000 series of environmental management standards. The current version of this EMS standard, referred to as ISO-14001:1996, went into effect in 1996. Since then thousands of organizations around the world have voluntarily used ISO-14001 as a model for a system to manage their environmental issues. There is clear evidence that developing an EMS using ISO-14001 as a model results in significantly better environmental performance, improved regulatory compliance, greater acceptance of the organization's practices and, perhaps most importantly, reduced costs. Organizations can, if they wish, achieve "certification" (also called "registration") of conformance with ISO-14001 by successfully passing a third party audit of their EMS. This audit verifies that the organization's EMS conforms with ISO-14001 requirements. The basic elements of ISO-14001:1996 are listed below.
